A September Day in Brimfield

Just kicked off my shoes. Unwinding from a day of shopping and looking at antique buttons, lace and an Eames Folding Card Table ($600.00 thank you very much). When I saw the table and ran my fingers over it...I thought, "Mah Jongg" This would be a perfect MJ table for sure. Then I asked the price. Moving on, I came upon a table filled with vintage hankies and linens. Really fun stuff. I made a pile. The dealer went through it. He wanted more than I wanted to spend but we reached an agreement on the price, he was happy and so was I. Now I have to wash and iron everything.

It was a day for antique buttons. My favorite purchase was an old green and white paper plate filled with beautiful antique buttons (three are large and fabulous). I'm taking this card to the next button club meeting. The theme is "bring your favorite carded buttons" to the meeting. No one will have a card like this.

More antique buttons found their way into my bag. It was definitely a "button" day at Brimfield.

And a lace day as well. A box filled with lace trim, and at least half were handmade lace. Some black, some sweet lace cuffs. I love "lace".

And lots of pretty hankies. Unusual ones. No photos yet (I have to wash and iron them first!)

It's always fun at Brimfield. My next time will be next May, 2014. Can't wait.

Last Monday's Sketchers - Great Model - Mary Jo

Drawn on my ipad with paper 53 - July 1, 2013

A rainy Sunday morning

Sat down with my new journal and painted a little sketch of a memory back  in 1948. Used watercolor travel set (love the colors in the pans) and my newest pen with the water in the handle. What a great little travel pen. No need for a jar of water. Also used a micro pen for the writing and outlining. IS THERE REALLY A SANTA CLAUS....Most definitely yes because he came to my house in 1948.

First Monday Sketchers after Cape Cod

This was our fabulous model this morning. Elisa Campbell sat for us and we really enjoyed drawing her. This one was drawn on my ipad with paper 53. One hour!

Another produced this one! Also in paper 53 on my ipad

She was a terrific model. She lives in Amherst, Mass.

At the breakfast table - fruit painted on a fruit plate. Watercolor

Love this Franciscan vintage "fruit" pattern. Shopped for an orange with leaves still attached. Found one. Size 9" x 5" Watercolor on 140# paper

Watercolor on Yupo Paper

Drip! Drip! Drip! The best part about yupo watercolor paper is the dripping of pretty watercolors. 5" x 7".

Little digital drawing on my ipad this morning

Do you know what these are? They are little plastic containers for making frozen popsicles. Comes in a package of four...pretty pastel colors. I only show three because one is still in the freezer filled with coconut milk, coconut, vanilla, crushed pineapple and sugar free Hershey chocolate. Delish!

One night last week, on the sofa with my ipad, this was drawn. Very fine lines one color over the top of other colors.

Watercolor at the breakfast table

This painting began yesterday at Lou Currin's watercolor class. This morning I finished it at the breakfast table. There is something about the blue and orange that I like.

I saved my dog this morning!

At the breakfast table, Buddy was doing his usual jumping on me and licking me (which usually means he wants me to fill his ball with treats so he can spend the next 20 minutes getting them out)...but I felt something.....something on his felt like a splinter of wood or thorn possibly. Every time he licked my hand, I could feel it. It didn't seem to bother him. I gave him his acrylic bone with some peanut butter thinking that the roughness of the bone - he might get that thing out by himself. I fretted. And I fretted. I took a shower. Came out and it (the thing) was still there. I got dressed. Thinking of the $100 at least bill from the vet. Then I got myself together, and sat on the bed. He came over and looked up at me. I opened his mouth and I could see a needle had pierced his tongue. It was at least 1/2 inch into his tongue and another 1/2 inch sticking out. I reached in and pulled it out. No sign of pain except on my face.

I feel so much better now that the weight of the world is off my shoulders. FYI: The needle was 1.25" long and sharp at both ends....I don't know where he got it or what it could have been. Maybe I don't want to know.

Just made a batch of crystalized ginger!

Very easy but it takes some time. Start off with cutting off the skin of over a pound of fresh ginger. Best to buy in Spring before the ginger gets stringy.

Once the skin is removed, cut the ginger in thin slices. Then cook the ginger in a stainless steel pan. Bring to a boil and then on simmer for ten minutes. Drain the water and put fresh water and cover the ginger and cook it again (same way)...

Add 4 cups of sugar (that's right, that is not a typo,) to the pan with the cooked ginger slices, add the candy thermometer, boil until it reads 225F. Let it sit for an hour and place into a glass jar with lid. It will last a year in your refrigerator.

Did you know that eating ginger is good for people who suffer from "vertigo".

Netflix is best $7.99 month deal!

When I discovered that I can take a picture on my ipad of scenes that I'm watching on Netflix, it gave me endless opportunities to photograph my favorite actors portraits and beautiful landscapes, from my favorite movies. It all began while I watching "Wallander", a swedish series from a few years ago. Loved the landscape, the actors, the stories. Then I discovered a new British version of "Wallander" with Kenneth Branagh. So I began snapping my favorite scenes. Then when I want to draw, I call up the scene on my ipad and begin drawing. Here is Branagh at a funeral in front of a beautiful white church.

Today's the Day!

Burt has just left to pick up "Buddy"! He was neutered last Thursday. We kept him at the Vet kennel until he was good to come home. This has been the longest 5 days ever. But it won't be long now. He will burst on the scene any minute. Welcome home Buddy.
